00:00Install
Install the extension.
Voicetrail isn't in the Chrome Web Store yet. Until it is, install it by hand. It takes about two minutes and works in Chrome, Edge, Brave and other Chromium browsers (version 116 or later).
Steps
01Download and unzip
Download the zip with the button above and unzip it into a folder you will keep, for example Documents/Voicetrail. The browser loads the extension from that folder, so don't delete or move it afterwards.
02Open the extensions page
Type the address for your browser in the address bar: chrome://extensions in Chrome, edge://extensions in Edge, brave://extensions in Brave.
03Turn on Developer mode
Switch on Developer mode: top right in Chrome and Brave, in the left sidebar in Edge.
04Load the folder
Click Load unpacked and select the folder you unzipped (the one that contains manifest.json). Voicetrail appears in the list.
05Pin it and sign in
Click the puzzle icon in the toolbar and pin Voicetrail. Open it, click Sign in and enter the code we email you.
Updates
An extension installed this way doesn't update by itself. When we tell you a new version is out, download it, replace the contents of the same folder with the new files, then click the reload arrow on Voicetrail's card in the extensions page. You stay signed in.
Once Voicetrail is in the Chrome Web Store, remove this copy and install it from the store. You'll need to sign in once more.
If something goes wrong
- "Manifest file is missing". You selected the folder above the right one. Pick the folder that contains manifest.json.
- A warning about developer mode extensions. Some browsers show one at startup. Choose to keep the extension.
- Load unpacked is missing. Your company may block extensions installed by hand. Ask your IT team, or wait for the store version.
- Sign-in doesn't come back to the extension. Make sure you installed the zip from this page; other copies can't sign in to your account.
